Our Role
As a sub-committee of Mandurah Environment & Heritage Group (MEHG), Bouvard Coast Care (BCCG) are a group of volunteers that work to maintain the fragile
dune ecosystem in co-ordination with Mandurah City Council.
BCCG is responsible for the long stretch of dunes that run from the south side of the Dawesville Cut south to the Cities boundary,
approximately 23km in total.
The coastal dunes provide a dynamic, diverse and fragile interface between the biomes of sea and land. The land is in part managed by the
City of Mandurah and DPAW which has responsibility for the adjoining Yalgorup National Park.
This coastal environment is subject to multiple pressures from both users and the adjoining biomes themselves and by managing these
pressures, we can provide some long term stability.
The pressures take the form of illegal Off Road Vehicles and 4WD vehicle activity, illegal camping, fires, littering, sandboarding, storm
activity, introduced plants and their diseases and pests, and aeolian erosion.
The single most important management tool available is the preservation of vegetation on the dunal areas
By preserving the existing vegetation and encouraging regrowth in damaged areas, further degradation is halted and long term stability maintained. This can be
achieved through environmentally sensitive design and management and by educating users to:
•
manage vehicle activity to confine it to existing access tracks
•
discourage the damage to dunes by illegal vehicle activity, camping and fires.
•
encourage proper use of beach areas for recreation, fishing, driving etc.
•
preserve primary dunes to protect their role during storm activity and the effects of climate change
•
preserve primary swales and secondary dune vegetation to prevent further erosion.
The first three roles above are enforced by managing land holders whereas Bouvard Coast Care Group role is aimed at the final two processes above.
